5K Race for Freedom, A Soldiers Legacy
September 5th 2009
I had the privilege to participate in the September 5, 2009 “5K Race for Freedom, A Soldiers Legacy” organized in memory of Sergeant Ashly Moyer, United States Army, 630th Military Police Company. “She was promoted to Sergeant shortly before she died in Baghdad, Iraq on March 3, 2007, when an IED exploded under the armored patrol vehicle she was driving.” We often talk cavalierly about patriotism, honor and sacrifice. Ashly lived those virtues and we bring honor to her memory by recognizing her ultimate payment for our freedom.
“Ashly Moyer was loved by many, and it is that love that has inspired "Ashly's 5K Race for Freedom, A Soldiers Legacy". A portion of the proceeds from the race will benefit the "Ashly Moyer Memorial Scholarship Fund", established at Emmaus High School, Ashly's alma mater. The majority of the proceeds will be donated to The Lehigh Valley Blue Star Mothers, a group that supports our troops and veterans. It is our hope that through Ashly's sacrifice, we will be able to make a difference in the lives of others who are committed to keeping America free.”
I will participate in this event every year as a small token of my appreciation for Ashly’s sacrifice and in support of her stepmom, Deb and all of the people who find the strength to bring this event together each year! God bless America and God bless our men and women in uniform and all of their family and friends!
