Patrick Slattery Announces Candidacy for
State Representative in Pennsylvania's 134th District

September 10th 2009

Lower Macungie Township resident and local Health Care Director of Business Development, Patrick Slattery, Announces Organization of Campaign to Become the State Representative for Pennsylvania’s 134th District

“No budget should =
No paychecks for Legislators and Governor!”

Lower Macungie Township, PA – This morning, local health care leader, Patrick Slattery, announced his intention to run for State Representative in Pennsylvania’s 134th District.

A lifelong resident of the Lehigh Valley, husband and father of two boys, Patrick Slattery is also a graduate of the DeSales University MBA Program.  He is offering to bring his nearly 20 years of practical, private sector experience to a bureaucracy in desperate need of new ideas.  Mr. Slattery recognizes the tremendous opportunities for state government to better serve the citizens of our Commonwealth and the people of the 134th District.

“I’m running for the State House because there has never been a clearer and more obvious need for a fresh perspective in Harrisburg.  The persistent partisan bickering has lead to few significant accomplishments in recent years.  This lack of cooperation and failure to work toward solutions is most plainly evident in the failure of the Legislature and Governor to pass an on-time balanced budget.  This year is particularly worse than past years.  The 2009-2010 budget process has been especially challenging and we have been without a state budget for over 70 days.  This unacceptable budget impasse is hurting virtually every segment of our Commonwealth.  Suffering the consequences are pre-schools, day care centers, school districts, social service providers, county and municipal governments, colleges and universities, libraries and the list goes on and on and on…  Ultimately, the citizens of the Commonwealth pay the price and endure the greatest sacrifices!”

“One of the primary duties of the Legislature and the Governor is to pass an on-time and complete balanced budget.  In the private sector, the penalty for an employee failing to fulfill a primary responsibility is, You’re fired! For this reason, my first pledge, as the next State Representative for the 134th District, is to defer my salary until a complete and balanced budget is passed.  Like every other entity that relies on the state for funding, the Legislature and Governor must not be paid until the full budget is passed.  I will honor this pledge as one elected official and take responsibility for my part in the budget process and I will work hard to convince my legislative colleagues and the Governor to join this pledge.”

“I have been talking extensively with residents in my district and several themes have become abundantly clear.  Voters are deeply disappointed with the failures of the legislature, tired of the hypocrisy of politicians and fed up with partisan point scoring and game play.  The bottom line is that folks are disgusted by the politics as usual mentality that dominates Harrisburg.  And, voters are ready to support candidates that are focused on solving problems and getting the job done!  Sadly, the current Representative for the 134th District, Doug Reichley, epitomizes politics as usual.  His response to the budget impasse has been to point fingers at the Governor and any Democrat within earshot.  His response has been to play party politics, watch so many across the Commonwealth suffer and sit silent as legislators collect their paychecks with absolutely no consequence.  As voters, our primary defense against Mr. Reichley is to vote him out of office in next year’s election!  I am making this early announcement so that the people of this district know that they will have the choice to vote for a competent person who believes that doing the right thing and working for the people and not party politics is what the voter values.
